BIRCHWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD
A great place for families, the Birchwood neighborhood in northwest Bellingham features older, well-maintained single-family homes set on deep lots. Long, quiet streets and mature trees lend an air of countryside living to the neighborhood. Shopping is convenient with an Albertson’s grocery store, a Rite-Aid, and various shops and small businesses close-by. Multi-family zoning has also made way for newer apartment buildings along Northwest Avenue and Maplewood.
Birchwood is a fantastic place for those with young children—it is common to see kids riding their bikes down the street or playing together in one of the neighborhood’s parks. Though larger Cornwall Park is just across Meridian Street to the east, families can also take advantage of playtime at Birchwood Park or a walk on the beach at Little Squalicum Park.
Several schools are located in the neighborhood: young children attend Birchwood or Alderwood Elementary, while older kids attend Shuksan Middle School. Teens attend Squalicum High School in nearby Mt. Baker neighborhood. For those looking to grow their current career or launch a new one, Birchwood is also home to countless vocational training opportunities at Bellingham Technical College.
