MERIDIAN NEIGHBORHOOD
Bellingham’s Meridian neighborhood is a major center of commerce for Whatcom County and beyond. The Bellis Fair Mall, which first opened in the late 1980’s along the Guide Meridian, is a main shopping attraction—not only for locals, but also for Canadian shoppers, who enjoy its close proximity to Vancouver, B.C.
Bellis Fair Mall boasts several major retailers, such as Macy’s, JCPenney’s, Kohl’s, and Target, as well as many smaller clothing and specialty shops. Regal Cinemas also operates Bellingham’s largest movie theater here.
Other businesses soon sprung up in the area because of the bustle the mall created. Restaurants such as Red Robin and Boston Pizza offer casual dining just outside the mall’s doors, as does the Denny’s across the street. The Home Depot and Ross are also located just across the street, and smaller local businesses such as Silhouettes Day Spa take advantage of the prime location.
Residential opportunities are still catching up to the commercial growth in the area, but apartments and condominiums in the south part of the neighborhood are already home to many families, with more construction planned. Residents enjoy quick and easy access to shopping, schools, work, and I-5, and plans are in the works for additional parks to beautify the neighborhood. Children here attend Parkview Elementary, Whatcom Middle School, and Bellingham High School.
