Skagit County

La Conner

The quaint Pacific Northwest city of La Conner (population 870 in 2009), nestled in forests of cedar and fir, is popular with tourists, but owners of La Conner real estate enjoy its features year-round. Founded in the early 1860s, La Conner is Skagit County's oldest community, situated on the delta near the mouth of the Skagit River.

The business district lies along the Swinomish Channel. Locally-owned shops and restaurants along the waterfront offer wonderful views. Conducting a La Conner MLS Search will help you find a piece of La Conner real estate to enjoy these views.

La Conner boasts three acclaimed yet quite distinct museums. The Museum of Northwest Art features revolving exhibitions and a permanent collection, all focusing on art of the Pacific Northwest. The La Conner Quilt Museum is the only quilt museum in the Pacific Northwest area and one of only 12 in the United States. History and Swinomish tribal culture is preserved in the Skagit County Historical Museum.

Owners of Pacfic Northwest real estate who are recreational boaters have access via Swinomish Channel to the scenic San Juan Islands. If you don't have a boat, ferries heading to the islands are just a half-hour away in Anacortes.

Plenty of freshwater and saltwater fishing, hunting and hiking opportunities are available in the area for La Conner real estate owners. Golfers can try their luck at a number of nearby courses, including the challenging 27-hole Avalon Golf Course in Burlington and Eaglemount Golf Course in Mount Vernon. Skiers and snowboarders are less than two hours away from the Mount Baker Ski Area, which typically has the most snowfall and longest ski season in the state, and several other ski areas. Conducting a Pacific NW MLS search can help you locate a prime poperty to enjoy these activities.

The Mt. Baker Ranger Station in nearby Sedro-Woolley is a source of information for travelers, hikers and campers heading to the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and North Cascades National Park. The station has many guidebooks and detailed hiking maps. Call (360) 856-5700.

Residents of La Conner homes are actively involved in the community, making possible popular annual events such as La Conner Summer Arts Festival in June. They're also just minutes away from the spectacular display of color in fields that is presented in April during the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. They'll also have a great front-row seat to all the excitement during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

La Conner offers a wide range of health-care services and is just 15 minutes from Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Business travelers and tourists are within an hour of Bellingham International Airport, which is served by Delta Air Lines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air. For a big-city experience and major airports, Seattle is just slightly more than hour to the south and Vancouver, B.C. can be reached in 90 minutes.

The La Conner School District provides education for children in kindergarten through high school. Nearby colleges include Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon and Western Washington University in Bellingham.
