is the core of cultural, civic, financial, and service activity in the community. Locals and visitors alike find plenty to do here—and find there’s always more to explore. From banks and business supply stores to public buildings such as the Post Office, Courthouse, and Public Library, Downtown brings all kinds of services and amenities within easy reach. The iconic Bellingham Herald building is a major part of the city skyline, as is the beautifully restored Whatcom Museum. Arts, education, and entertainment opportunities are everywhere you look in Downtown Bellingham. In addition to the Whatcom Museum, class field trips often take tours of the American Museum of Radio and Electricity. Book lovers get lost for hours in Michael’s and Henderson Books. Live music plays at several venues throughout the week, and there are regular poetry readings at Fantasia Coffee House. The Mount Baker Theater brings big concerts, ballets and plays to Bellingham, while the Pickford Cinema showcases the best of indie film. At the Depot, a thriving farmer’s market is open every Saturday from April to December. Downtown Bellingham is also a fantastic place to eat. Local restaurants abound. From fresh bagels at the ever-popular Bagelry to Mexican fare at Bandito’s Burritos, and from upscale Italian dining at Guiseppe’s to wood fired pizza at La Fiamma, there are endless restaurants to experience with friends and family. Teriyaki, Thai, Sushi, Home-style: whatever your mood, Downtown has your appetite covered.

Those who choose to live in Downtown often live in newer condominium buildings. More high-rises are planned in the neighborhood, giving even more people the pleasure of living right in the thick of this vibrant community. Most students here attend Lowell elementary, Whatcom Middle School, and either Sehome High School.
