HAPPY VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD
Aptly named, the Happy Valley neighborhood is a lively, popular place to live in Bellingham. With its blend of single-family homes and student housing near Western Washington University, people of all ages and stages of life make their home here.
Western Washington University (WWU) continues to attract new growth to the area, and this is reflected in the number of convenient apartment communities in the northern part of the neighborhood. Students who wish to live off-campus can easily find affordable studio or 1-bedroom apartments. Small, eclectic homes-for-rent and duplexes are also common, all within walking or biking distance to the University. Whatcom Transit Authority also makes regular bus runs up to the center of campus and beyond.
In the southern part of the neighborhood, larger single-family residences are more common, with room to plant a garden and play catch with the kids (or grandkids). Newer residences and older, well-maintained homes are both common. The sloping roads and open spaces lend a relaxing country atmosphere to the neighborhood, even though residents are nestled only minutes from Fairhaven and I-5 access. Walking along one road, you might even be surprised to hear the bleat of a goat!
Shopping is close-by, both in Fairhaven, and in Sehome Village off Bill McDonald Parkway. Home to Haggen’s grocery, a busy-yet-friendly Starbucks, Northwest outdoor favorite REI and more, this shopping center is frequented by residents and visitors alike. Students here attend nearby Happy Valley Elementary, Fairhaven Middle School, or Sehome High School.
