The Sunnyland neighborhood is a smaller neighborhood located in the heart of Bellingham. Located west of Interstate 5 and north of the York neighborhood, this area offers a diverse blend of residential and commercial activity.

The recent opening of popular grocer Trader Joe’s in nicely renovated Sunnyland Square brought new life to the area in 2008. A Butterfly Life women’s fitness center is also located in the shopping center, as is a children’s consignment shop. Further south on James Street is Youngstocks, an open-air produce market with some of the freshest fruits and vegetables around. Other businesses in the area include local restaurants, coffee shops, and a seafood market. Larger grocers such as Fred Meyer are only minutes away on Lakeway Drive.

North of the major shopping activity are many unique, older homes on small lots. Renters and homeowners are common throughout the neighborhood, and though the condition of some of the homes varies, most are fairly well maintained, offering prospective residents a variety of choices, from perfect homes to fixer-uppers.

Elementary school students attend Sunnyland, Parkview, and Lowell Elementary Schools, while older students attend Whatcom and Kulshan Middle Schools, and Bellingham High School.
