Sumas

Sumas isn't particularly big (population of 1,326 in 2009), but its location at a 24-hour U.S.- Canadian border crossing is increasingly drawing attention from businesses, tourists and potential owners of Sumas real estate.

Sumas, in the Pacific Northwest area, is located approximately a half-hour northeast of Bellingham, accessible by State Routes 9 and 546. However, owning a piece of Sumas real estate means you will live in an area that also lies along a major north-south railroad line and is just across the border from the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) and Abbotsford, B.C., one of Canada's fastest-growing cities with a population of more than 114,000 and an international airport. Canada's primary east-west railroad line also is within minutes of Sumas property.

Major businesses that have arrived in Sumas recent years include the Sumas Cogeneration plant, Socco Forest Products and IKO Pacific, a roofing manufacturer. According to Sumas information, others expected to arrive in late 2006 or 2007 are Dentech, a manufacturer of dental equipment, and Canyon Industries, a worldwide leader in turbine technology.

The metropolitan pleasures of Seattle (2 hours away) and Vancouver, B.C. (1 hour) are easily within reach, but residents are more likely to go fishing, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, boating and much more. Both Mt. Baker and saltwater marinas are just an hour away from Sumas. Sumas will also serve as a gateway into Canada for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Community events include the Sumas Junior Rodeo held each Labor Day weekend.

Sumas also is close to Bellingham's educational institutions, including Western Washington University, which has approximately 14,000 full- and part-time students. For health-care needs, residents can choose from a number of local family-care providers and utilize the resources of Bellingham's St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients.
